Your voice first. AI when you need it.

AuthWriter is a desktop writing application designed for authors who require structure and planning tools without compromising their personal voice or creative autonomy. It operates primarily offline, storing projects locally on the user's device, and integrates optional AI assistance only when explicitly invoked by the user. The application targets novelists, screenwriters, and long-form fiction writers who need integrated tools for outlining, character development, world-building, and drafting—without reliance on cloud services or constant internet connectivity.
The software emphasizes focus and intentionality: its clean, paginated editor minimizes distractions, while dedicated modules for composition, characters, plotting, and research support iterative storytelling workflows. AuthWriter does not auto-generate narrative content; instead, its AI features serve as on-demand research and brainstorming aids, with all outputs requiring human review and editing.
AuthWriter functions as a self-contained desktop application. Upon installation, users create a local account using email and password, then begin by creating a new project. Each project contains multiple components: Documents (for drafting), Characters (with customizable fields and exportable sheets), Plotting boards (using draggable cards aligned to narrative structures), and Research (a chat interface for AI-assisted inquiry).
The core workflow begins with planning—users define characters, map plot points, and select structural frameworks—before moving into the Composition section to write in a paginated, WYSIWYG editor. Word-count goals can be set per session or project, with live progress tracking. When users choose to engage the AI research feature, they manually submit prompts; responses are generated by Mistral AI’s service and returned to the local application for review and integration. No writing or project data is stored on remote servers unless explicitly transmitted during AI use.
All exports—PDF, DOCX, and character sheets—are processed locally. Version 2.1.0 introduced improvements to export reliability, UI consistency, and character creation usability, alongside fixes for cross-platform compatibility and performance on Apple Silicon Macs.
AuthWriter supports practical, professional writing workflows where control, privacy, and intentionality are priorities. Authors use it to outline novels before drafting, maintain consistent character profiles across multi-book series, visualize story arcs using drag-and-drop plotting, and verify structural pacing against established frameworks like the Hero’s Journey or 5-Act Structure. Its offline capability makes it suitable for writing in low-connectivity environments, travel, or secure settings where cloud storage is prohibited.
The application also serves writers concerned about data sovereignty: because projects reside exclusively on the user’s device and no content is uploaded by default, users retain full ownership and control over intellectual property. The AI component remains strictly opt-in and context-limited, ensuring that human authorship remains central. For educators, editors, or developmental writing coaches, AuthWriter provides a structured yet flexible environment to teach narrative design principles without abstracting the writing process.
