Drag-and-drop effects to shape your system audio

Sonexis is a free macOS application designed for real-time, system-wide audio processing. It enables users to apply and chain audio effects to all audio output on their Mac—including streaming services, video playback, games, and system sounds—without requiring individual application support. The app targets audio enthusiasts, content creators, accessibility users, and developers who need flexible, low-latency audio routing and enhancement capabilities.
Built with stability and usability in mind, Sonexis operates as a system-level audio processor using macOS’s Audio Unit (AU) and virtual audio device infrastructure. It requires no third-party kernel extensions and integrates cleanly with the operating system’s audio stack. The interface centers on a visual canvas that abstracts signal flow into intuitive drag-and-drop interactions, making advanced audio processing accessible without deep technical knowledge.
Sonexis functions by inserting itself into macOS’s audio routing path via a virtual audio device. When activated, system audio is redirected through Sonexis before reaching physical outputs (speakers or headphones). Within the app, users build effect chains on a graphical canvas: each effect appears as a draggable module, and connections between modules determine the order and topology of signal processing.
The app supports two primary workflow modes. In Automatic Wiring mode, effects are connected sequentially in the order they are added, simplifying setup for beginners. In Manual Control mode, users can create branching paths, split signals, merge outputs, and route audio across parallel effect chains—enabling advanced configurations such as applying reverb only to vocals while compressing drums separately. Dual Mono Mode allows asymmetric processing, where distinct effects can be applied to the left and right channels independently.
All changes take effect immediately, with no need to restart applications or reboot. Effects are processed in real time using optimized audio code, and presets preserve both effect parameters and connection topology for reproducible results.
Sonexis serves multiple practical use cases: enhancing audio clarity for hearing accessibility; tailoring system sound for gaming or media consumption (e.g., bass boost for movies, de-mud for podcasts); preparing audio feeds for streaming or recording; prototyping effect chains before committing to hardware or DAW workflows; and enabling creative sound design during everyday computer use. Its system-wide scope eliminates the need to configure effects per application, and its stability ensures compatibility with services like Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, and Apple Music. The inclusion of professional-grade tools—including 10-band EQ, soft compression, and tape saturation—makes it suitable for both casual listeners and technically inclined users seeking precise sonic control without a full digital audio workstation.
